Going for the Gold Campaign
Iowa City has a goal of achieving the League of American Bicyclist (LAB) Gold Level in the Bicycle Friendly Community Program by the end of 2017. LAB has provided general guidelines of the measures required to get to Gold. The document can be downloaded here.
Local biking advocates have begun the Going for the Gold Campaign. The campaign plans to promote sustainable activities that encourage safe biking, bike education, and a positive biking culture in the Iowa City Metro area and Johnson County. The campaign builds on our successful effort becoming a Blue Zones Community and enhances Iowa City’s STAR sustainability rating. To facilitate the process, biking advocates are supporting the effort with seed money (currently $5100) to fund events and activities that promote the bike friendly goals. We continue to seek out potential community partners for their support.
Grant applications will be accepted beginning February 1 and awarded within several weeks of submission until our funds are exhausted. Grants will be awarded up to $500, however exceptions, in larger amounts, may be considered. Projects must be completed by the end of 2017. Projects that respond to the LAB’s major evaluation areas (engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, equity, and evaluation or ways to assess bike modal share) and specifically items in the LAB’s 2013 evaluation of Iowa City have added appeal.
Some examples of programs that respond to our goals are listed below. Other creative ideas are encouraged.
